
The Sons of The American Legion is an organization of male
descendants of military veterans and is best described by the Preamble to the
National Constitution of The Sons of The American Legion:
To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to
maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a true spirit of Americanism;
to preserve the memories of our former members and the association of our
members and our forefathers in the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of
individual obligation to the Community, State and Nation; to combat the
autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might;
to promote peace and good will on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity
the principles of justice, freedom and democracy, to consecrate and sanctify our
friendship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness; to adopt in letter and spirit
all of the great principles for which The American Legion standards; and to
assist in carrying on for God and Country.
The Sons of The American Legion (SAL) is a program of The American Legion and
was established in 1933 in Portland Oregon. Since then, the Sons of The American
Legion have assisted The American Legion with their programs and activities. The
Sons of The American Legion in 1995 attained an all time high membership of over
178,000 plus members nationally. The largest Detachment (State level) has over
24,000 members. There are trophies and awards given to Detachments and Squadrons
for the largest membership, and the largest increase in membership.
The Sons of The American Legion is more than just membership. The Sons of The
American Legion, on all levels, have worked together with the American Legion to
promote Children and Youth programs, including The American Legion Child Welfare
Foundation, which the Sons of The American Legion raised over $87,000 for in
1995. Since 1988, the Sons of The American Legion have raised over $475,000 for
the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation.
The Sons of The American Legion members have donated over 35,000 hours in the
Veterans Hospitals throughout the country and raised over $160,000 that has gone
directly to the hospitals for a variety of items including TV's, radios, medical
equipment, and clothes for the patients.
The Sons of The American Legion continues to provide services to those in
need in the local communities, through programs that include fundraising events.
The American Legion, the Sons of The American Legion and the American Legion
Auxiliary form the "Legion Family". A family with a total membership of nearly
4.2 million.
The Sons of The American Legion are assisting The American Legion and the
Citizens Flag Alliance in their efforts to pass a Constitutional Amendment to
protect the Flag of The United States.
